Stone Mill Suites Building History
Circa 1885:  The building which is now Stone Mill Suites was completed by the Nelson brothers who constructed its walls out of limestone from the bluffs surrounding Lanesboro.  The stone building originally served as a cold storage facility, its lower levels being used to store ice cut from the nearby mill pond.  The cold storage complemented the egg and poultry receiving and processing plant located in the upper levels of the building.  Carload after carload of product was shipped east, preserved by the ice from the mill pond.

Mr. Fosse owned the stone building until the mid-1930’s when Mr. Wilson became operator.  The business continued until 1950, after which the stone building and the wood frame building just east of it were used by Lanesboro Grain, owned and operated by the Hager family.

The Lamon-Mortimer family purchased the facility in October 1999, our hope being to restore and preserve much of the building’s history and structure while providing a comfortable, elegant, and most importantly a fun lodging experience for our guest.

Riverside on the Root Opening

Riverside on the Root Evolution
Mike and Julie Charlebois purchased what is now the Riverside in the winter of 1996 opening its doors as Root River Outfitters in the Spring of 1997.  The building was originally a gas station in the late 1920’s, and in the 1950’s a car garage and carwash was added on.  In the Late 1960’s it was operated as the Johnson Fur Buying Company buying and trading furs.  In the early 1980’s it was purchased by Don Chapel and named Root River Outfitters thus purchased in 1992 by Larry Charlebois and then sold to Mike and Julie in 1996 who kept it as a total rental Outfitter until 2000 when they started their dream of adding a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.  Now celebrating the Riversides 10th year, the Dirty Martini Lounge was added upstairs in 2009.  In 2010, Root River Outfitters was moved to 105 South Parkway, just two buildings north, and is still operated by Mike and Julie.

Unnasch Art Installation Signposts in Downtown Lanesboro, Minnesota are functional & aesthetic

Lanesboro, Minnesota was the recipient of a Town Meeting Initiative (TMI) Grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF). According to Tim Penny, SMIF President & CEO, “Through TMI, we encourage communities and organizations to draw on their own assets to create change rather than looking to ‘outside experts’ for answers and assistance.” This initiative brought community members together to consider Lanesboro’s assets, set goals, and accomplish projects.

One identified project involved improving signage in the downtown district.  Several community members had the vision of merging signage functionality with art.  This is when Karl Unnasch from Pilot Mound Design brought his talent to the table.  Karl finds value and effective use in quite possibly everything he comes across. His experience with reclaimed materials is vast and continues to expand. Raw materials are collected, categorized and then recycled into new materials. Found objects are repurposed into clever new designs for living architectural flair, pure aesthetics, and functional gear. The conversion of material and objects is limitless.  According to Karl, “The Lanesboro signage project came into being during the downturn of the economy.  The symbols of the Egg, Berry, and Nut were chosen for their elemental significance to life cycles, nourishment, and natural potential.”

The three new signposts with unique finials in Downtown Lanesboro were made possible through a collaboration of designers, builders and funders.  In addition to the Town Meeting Initiative support, Karl Unnasch received a Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) grant.  The finials, hangers and posts were made possible by SEMAC, NRB Metals and Pilot Mound Design.  Aluminum signs were funded by Root River Valley Friends of the Arts, Inc. (RRVFOTA), a non-profit corporation in Lanesboro dedicated to propagating the public enjoyment of the arts within Lanesboro and surrounding communities through collaboration.

All installation and prep was made possible by Andy Bunge of Bunge Construction and Sheldon Kinneberg of Preston Iron Works. Eric and Andy Bunge donated both materials and labor for the project to come to fruition.  Lanesboro City employee, Andy Drake, ran the city equipment to assist with the installation.  It took all partners to ultimately accomplish the goals of the project.

Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce Director, Julie Kiehne, commented “As Lanesboro grows as a tourist destination, we continue to work toward improving the directional signage. These signs will have an impact on visitor experiences, leading them to our businesses and engaging them further in our community. Many thanks to everyone involved.”

Beautiful views are just one facet of the Church Hill School Condominiums that residents are enjoying in their new spaces.   Reasons for buying homes in the old school building are similar: the view, convenience, quality of the space and construction, ambiance, and most of all the friendly small town of Lanesboro, Minnesota. One of the new owners, Mike Dalton, said that  “People here are almost as nice as in Iowa.”

Angie Taylor Welcoming You to Pedal Pusher's Cafe & Pedaler's Roast Coffee Bar

At Pedal Pushers Cafe in Lanesboro, Minnesota, fair-trade organic coffee seems to be an ideal complement to the flavorful meals made from locally grown foods.

Owners Scott and Angie Taylor, who have run the Lanesboro restaurant for six years, work with local farmers to get milk and cream from pasture-grazed cows, eggs from cage-free chickens and meat from grass-fed beef.

About a year and a half ago, they added a coffee bar menu to offer espressos, cappuccinos and other specialty drinks to their customers. Organic and fair-trade organic coffee beans grown in countries such Guatemala and Ethiopia and the island of Sumatra are fresh roasted at the restaurant. The Taylors also supply their “Pedaler’s Roast” coffee beans to bed-and-breakfast establishments in the area.
