Jon Pieper is owner of the Old Village Hall Restaurant in Lanesboro, Minnesota and a fourth generation Southeast Minnesotan. “Nobody in my family had ever picked morels. I was surprised to find out that morel mushrooms have such a cult following.” From this regional obsession emerged his restaurant’s annual Morel Festival, when he prepares menus of succulent morel dishes and attracts fans from all over the state and beyond.
Jon is now an avid morel hunter himself, and he says that it’s “a great Minnesota outdoor activity that anyone can do. The great thing about morel mushrooms is that nothing else looks like them and they are relatively easy to find. In Southeastern Minnesota, they tend to come up under dead elm trees. It’s a great family pastime. I took my five year old son out in the backyard, and we picked about five pounds in an half hour.”
As for eating the morels, Jon hosts his Morel Festival every year in March, well before the hunting season. “I dried about thirty pounds of morels last spring. The March festival features dried mushrooms. The mushrooms are more intense when dried. They also can be rehydrated and used similarly to fresh mushrooms. Dried mushrooms can be put in a blender with flour and seasoning make a great coating for meat. They even can be used for making ice cream.”

By Jackie Rehm
Let me introduce myself. I am Jackie (Landsverk) Rehm, born and raised in Lanesboro, MN. Fifteen years ago, I came back home to start a business, and here I am now, running a successful motel in Lanesboro and enjoying small town life.
It has been a journey. Starting and operating Green Gables Inn has been one of the most challenging endeavors in my life thus far. My learning curve started out steep, and then stayed that way. Every time I think I’ve figured it all out, technology changes, the economy changes, and my customers’ needs change. It is ever evolving. And I love the challenge.
I would encourage anyone who loves hard work and who has an adventuresome spirit to try it. The risk is worth it: there’s nothing better than the feeling of getting up every morning knowing that whatever you do that day is fully your decision. Owning your own business challenges almost every sensible notion you’ve ever had. I have been conflicted in decision making and confronted with bad decisions, but at the end of the day, I’ve always known that those decisions were mine to make and mine to correct.
My friend Bonnie Handmacher, another B&B owner, recently asked me if she could have her wedding on the grounds of Green Gables. Of course I said “Yes” right away, even though I hadn’t realized or fully appreciated what a perfect site it would turn out to be. As planned by Bonnie, the wedding was absolutely beautiful, and I thoroughly enjoyed not only the satisfaction of seeing a friend happily marry, but also providing a space in which a multitude of friends could enjoy the couple and each other on a perfect summer afternoon. I learned that my property could play “Host” in yet another way. As I said earlier: ever evolving. My journey continues and I am still looking forward.
As I reflect on the last fifteen years of running a successful small business, I am pleased with the results of my efforts. Has it been easy? Not always. Has it been rewarding? Yes. Would I do it again? Most certainly.

Quick Bites: Lanesboro keeps it local, local, local Rochester Post Bulletin by Kimberly Van Brunt 3/14/2010 5:00:07 AM
The small, but vibrant, restaurant scene just shy of an hour southeast of Rochester is inspiring for many reasons — but they have one loud-and-clear message: They are all about keeping it local, local, local. Read more.

Kari’s Scandinavian Restaurant is the newest spot in downtown
Lanesboro, Minnesota, moving into the space vacated by The Vintage when it closed in October. While the restaurant is a new concept, the folks behind it are familiar: Owners are Scott and Angie Taylor of Pedal Pushers Cafe. Scott Taylor says that they’re trying out new dishes every weekend, many of them based on family recipes from chef Marina Ludwigson.
