‘Live Local, Live Well’: That’s the town motto of Lanesboro, the Bed & Breakfast Capital of Minnesota

Historic Downtown Lanesboro

Historic Downtown Lanesboro

Engrave your name on a brick or add it to the back of an auditorium seat: That’s how a lot of nonprofit enterprises raise money. At Commonweal Theatre in Lanesboro, Minn., donors get their name on a Mason jar and fill it with whatever they choose.

So lining a wall are rows of containers that hold photos, paintbrushes, golf tees, messages and other mementoes of life. The Donor Pantry is novel thinking, but that seems to come naturally in Lanesboro, Minnesota  population 800, which in 2009 had the nerve to prod state legislators into designating the community as Bed and Breakfast Capital of Minnesota.

Stone Mill Suites Building History
Circa 1885:  The building which is now Stone Mill Suites was completed by the Nelson brothers who constructed its walls out of limestone from the bluffs surrounding Lanesboro.  The stone building originally served as a cold storage facility, its lower levels being used to store ice cut from the nearby mill pond.  The cold storage complemented the egg and poultry receiving and processing plant located in the upper levels of the building.  Carload after carload of product was shipped east, preserved by the ice from the mill pond.

Mr. Fosse owned the stone building until the mid-1930’s when Mr. Wilson became operator.  The business continued until 1950, after which the stone building and the wood frame building just east of it were used by Lanesboro Grain, owned and operated by the Hager family.

The Lamon-Mortimer family purchased the facility in October 1999, our hope being to restore and preserve much of the building’s history and structure while providing a comfortable, elegant, and most importantly a fun lodging experience for our guest.

Riverside on the Root Opening

Riverside on the Root Evolution
Mike and Julie Charlebois purchased what is now the Riverside in the winter of 1996 opening its doors as Root River Outfitters in the Spring of 1997.  The building was originally a gas station in the late 1920’s, and in the 1950’s a car garage and carwash was added on.  In the Late 1960’s it was operated as the Johnson Fur Buying Company buying and trading furs.  In the early 1980’s it was purchased by Don Chapel and named Root River Outfitters thus purchased in 1992 by Larry Charlebois and then sold to Mike and Julie in 1996 who kept it as a total rental Outfitter until 2000 when they started their dream of adding a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.  Now celebrating the Riversides 10th year, the Dirty Martini Lounge was added upstairs in 2009.  In 2010, Root River Outfitters was moved to 105 South Parkway, just two buildings north, and is still operated by Mike and Julie.

Angie Taylor Welcoming You to Pedal Pusher's Cafe & Pedaler's Roast Coffee Bar

At Pedal Pushers Cafe in Lanesboro, Minnesota, fair-trade organic coffee seems to be an ideal complement to the flavorful meals made from locally grown foods.

Owners Scott and Angie Taylor, who have run the Lanesboro restaurant for six years, work with local farmers to get milk and cream from pasture-grazed cows, eggs from cage-free chickens and meat from grass-fed beef.

About a year and a half ago, they added a coffee bar menu to offer espressos, cappuccinos and other specialty drinks to their customers. Organic and fair-trade organic coffee beans grown in countries such Guatemala and Ethiopia and the island of Sumatra are fresh roasted at the restaurant. The Taylors also supply their “Pedaler’s Roast” coffee beans to bed-and-breakfast establishments in the area.

Morel Mushrooms at Old Village Hall Restaurant in Lanesboro, Minnesota

An excerpt posted by Paul Austin . Read the entire story Star Tribune

Jon Pieper is owner of the Old Village Hall Restaurant in Lanesboro, Minnesota and a fourth generation Southeast Minnesotan.  “Nobody in my family had ever picked morels. I was surprised to find out that morel mushrooms have such a cult following.”  From this regional obsession emerged his restaurant’s annual Morel Festival, when he prepares menus of succulent morel dishes and attracts fans from all over the state and beyond.

Jon is now an avid morel hunter himself, and he says that it’s “a great Minnesota outdoor activity that anyone can do. The great thing about morel mushrooms is that nothing else looks like them and they are relatively easy to find. In Southeastern Minnesota, they tend to come up under dead elm trees. It’s a great family pastime. I took my five year old son out in the backyard, and we picked about five pounds in an half hour.”

As for eating the morels, Jon hosts his Morel Festival every year in March, well before the hunting season.  “I dried about thirty pounds of morels last spring. The March festival features dried mushrooms.  The mushrooms are more intense when dried. They also can be rehydrated and used similarly to fresh mushrooms. Dried mushrooms can be put in a blender with flour and seasoning make a great coating for meat. They even can be used for making ice cream.”

Shirley Endres (Owner) and Mary Michel Celebrate the upcoming BARNiversary

Doug Brenna and Shirley Endres, originally from small towns around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, purchased the property in late 1996 and have continued to take the business to a more complete ‘resort’ feel. They have added the 18-hole golf course facilities, remodeled the restaurant and bar, made changes to the pool patio area, have added a large playset and as always continue to make improvements to the physical facilities to update guest amenities. They work closely with their incredible staff to assure you feel at home and enjoy your stay. Because of this, please feel free to comment or make suggestions to any staff member about the resort and amenities. Our staff are closer to friends than employees. Slant Avenue Mercantile in Lanesboro, Minnesota

Friday, February 19th, 2010
Patrick Danz, Owner of Slant Avenue Mercantile

Patrick Danz, Owner of Slant Avenue Mercantile

In 2008 after several years of visiting and falling in love with Lanesboro, Minnesota and surrounding nature Patrick Danz turned the Doc Westrup building into a home and store front.  Built in 1895, on Slant Avenue, 105 Elmwood St. E as its now named is the perfect historical location for a unique and intelligent retail store that offers great priced gifts and treats for all occasions it’s the place to find products from all over the world including local artist’s ware like jewelry and home décor.  Toys for kids of all ages, collectable tin wind-ups for the collector to the cutest stuffed animals and hats for infants.  All the games we loved when we were kids to the best coffee, teas and accessories we crave as adults.  Fun books and reading along with sketchbooks and journals that are great in companion with the quality pens and pencils Slant Ave sells.  Patrick has a huge sweet tooth and is always searching for the best treats from all over including the newest addition B.T. McElrath chocolate bars from Mpls.  The store is an eclectic array of products just to numerous to mention which is part of the fun shopping here, you never know what you’ll find each time you visit.

Expansion Plans for Slant Avenue Mercantile

Expansion Plans for Slant Avenue Mercantile

Future plans for Slant Avenue Mercantile and Patrick include the addition of a new studio at the rear of his store so new products and designs can be created to sell in the store.  The original building will continue to be restored to its original glory along with Patrick’s home upstairs.  This spring a new color will be tested on the front of the building and comments are welcomed.  Patrick invites everyone to come and view the new studio designs that will help improve the rear alley and longevity of the original 1895 structure.  One of the hardest parts of running a retail store and renovating a building is not having the time to be more active in the arts that attracted him here like the Cornucopia Arts center now known as the Lanesboro Arts Center and also the Commonweal Theater.  Attending the shows, biking and skiing on the great trails and fishing on the Root river are other passions along with all his support to all the awesome B&B’s and camp grounds so every guest tends to get an additional 10% at Slant Avenue Mercantile when they lodge in Fillmore County.
