Lanesboro, Minnesota: The belle of bluff country

In southeast Minnesota, tiny Lanesboro pulls in the tourists.

Bluffs hem in downtown Lanesboro on two sides.

In an isolated bluff-country valley, reached only by small, winding roads, lies one of Minnesota’s favorite getaways.

There are no condo resorts here, no wine bars and  — heaven forbid — no national franchises. The aroma of manure hangs over downtown on Wednesdays and Fridays, when livestock auctions are held.

Only 750 people live here, and they can’t afford to advertise much, so most visitors come via word of mouth.

Even so, Lanesboro is the town every other small town in the region wishes it could be.

For Lanesboro is right on the proverbial street paved with gold. The beautiful Root River State Trail goes through town, following the looping river and crossing it on dozens of wooden bridges.

This is a vintage photo of downtown Lanesboro.  The first building on the left is now home to Mrs. B’s Inn.  On July 20th, the view will be similar in as the National Model T car club tour makes a stop in Lanesboro.  The club will be touring Southeast Minnesota during the week and parking their vintage cars all along Parkway Avenue for you to enjoy.  More than 250 vintage cars are expected on the tour.

Model Ts are sometimes referred to as “tin lizzies.”  These two sweethearts are enjoying their 2 door tin lizzy.   This Model-T is an early-ish coupe, as it has rear-hinged “suicide” doors. Also note the two flags attached to the car’s radiator. A close look at the original photo shows a 1927 Minnesota license tag, or numberplate, with MINN (for Minnesota) down the right hand side of it.

I am sure the cars you will see in Lanesboro will be in as good or better shape.  Make your visit to Lanesboro complete by staying in one of our many bed and breakfasts.  The Hillcrest Hide-Away B&B is located three blocks from downtown Lanesboro.   So you will be within walking distance of the car display.  We hope to see you on July 20th.

Located in this small community is the Root River Trail which is a 60 mile paved bicycle trail and one of the earliest and most successful rails to trails projects anyplace.  Riding this trail will take you through the rolling hills of southeastern Minnesota with views of pristine fields, picture book farms, verdant valleys and rocky bluffs.  To spend a day or a couple of days on this trail will refresh your love for the outdoors and a great appreciation for southeastern Minnesota!

The ride will take you to the communities of Lanesboro, Harmony, Preston, Fountain, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston.

Harmony is the southern terminus of the Harmony-Preston Valley Trail System.  It sits just two miles north of the Minnesota-Iowa border and is the home to the Niagra Cave.

Preston is the county seat of Fillmore County.  The Harmony-Preston Valley trail passes through Preston connecting Harmony to the south with the Root River Valley Trail to the north.  There is a large park area where bikers can stop off for a bit, get something to eat in town or just relax for a bit.

Fountain is the western terminus fo the Root River Trail System.  Situated on the top of a gentle rise it will give you a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

The community of Lanesboro is not only the starting place for the trail but also home to Buffalo Bill Cody, a resident in the mid 1800′s.  Along with the trail you may enjoy a break while you do some canoeing, kayaking, fishing or hiking in this community area.

Whalan may have only 63 residents but it welcomes the bikers with some of the best homemade pie anyplace and if you are in the area on the third Saturday of May you will be able to see the famous “Stand Still Parade.”

Peterson is a village with great views for you to enjoy.  The trail intersects the town’s main street which makes it a perfect place to grab something to eat at one of the restaurants.

Rushford has the trail running adjacent to the towns historical museum where you will be able to see a one room schoolhouse.  Here, if you are Norwegian, you will find the wonderful Lefse made right here in the Lefse factory!  Now, you don’t HAVE to be Norwegian to love Lefse but it is a Norwegian delicacy.

Houston is the eastern terminus of the Root River Trail System.  The views between Rushford and Houston will take your breath away.  The route is more hilly in places than the rest of the ride.

Canoe Trip Down Minnesota’s Root River

by Marvin Eggert

According to www.RiverPaddling.com, “Southeastern Minnesota is a paddlers paradise for both canoeing and kayaking. The Driftless Area of Southeastern Minnesota is quite different than the rest of Minnesota as it contains no natural lakes and the terrain is quite rugged with spectacular scenery.”

Canoe Minnesota's Root River North Branch of the Root River

On Saturday, I paddled a section of the North Branch of the Root river northwest of Lanesboro, MN.  We put in the river on near Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.  The weather was hot and muggy.  But the river was cool and clear.  A nice breeze wafted through the valley making for a pleasant afternoon on the river.

The river is great for canoeing and kayaking.  The river is shallow and clear allowing us to see bottom for the entire stretch.  With extra rain this summer the river is high enough so there is no danger of bottoming out.  For a canoe novice like me, the river is just perfect.

The stretch of river surrounding Eagle Bluff is quite scenic with Bald Eagles and Turkey Vultures riding the updraft along the 400 foot bluffs that border the river.  Fishing is great along the tributaries of the north branch of the Root River upstream.

Minnesota River Kayak Kayaks on the North Branch of the Root River

The Root River’s superlative scenery and characteristics make it suitable for many types of recreation.  Family canoe trips are very popular.  Those more adventurous can take advantage of the canoe campsites for overnight trips.  A map showing camp sites and canoe launches can be found on the Minnesota DNR web site.

Outfitters in Lanesboro, MN offer canoe, kayak and tubing trips on the North and Middle branches of the Root River.

Lanesboro, the Bed and Breakfast capital of Minnesota offers 25 lodging establishments to suit any taste.   The historic downtown offers shopping, restaurants, an art gallery, and a live theatre that performs 5 days a week during the summer season.

This blog is edited by Marv Eggert co-owner of Hillcrest Hide-Away B&B in Lanesboro where you awaken each morning to a just-baked loaf of bread delivered to your room.  Come mid-week to enjoy the peace and quiet of the river.  Stay 2 nights and receive a $10 discount per night on your stay.

Explore the Root River Valley

Midwest Living  April, 2011

A rare mix of activities comes together in the Root River Valley in the southeast corner of Minnesota (100 miles south of the Twin Cities).  Along the 30-mile stretch between Lanesboro and Houston, the river, the paved Root River State Trail and the Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway (State-16) run parallel past storybook towns, bike-rental outlets, canoe outfitters, restaurants, homey cafes, shops and inns.

Trail traffic keeps Lanesboro and other towns along the way busy all year. In summer, bikes line up outside the Aroma Pie Shop in tiny Whalan (population: 64). In autumn, color splashes the bluffs, and hilltop apple trees beckon. In winter, the route becomes a cross-country skier’s dream, especially when Whalan lights a nighttime trail with candles.

Over the Back Fence Radio Show For the past 15 years “Over the Back Fence” has entertained us with local humor, outstanding music and just a good time. Oops, I Married a Junker…Who Wanted a B&B

Monday, January 17th, 2011

By Steve Harris

Susie & Steve Harris,

Steve and Susie Harris are innkeepers at Anna V’s Bed & Breakfast in Lanesboro, the Bed & Breakfast capital of Minnesota.

Two years ago I wrote an article in The Old Times called “Oops, I Married a Junker.” Susie and I were married in November, 2008, and honeymooned not in Hawaii or Bermuda, but in Red Wing, where we visited thrift shops and antique stores.

Yes, I married a junker.

I wasn’t complaining. Susie helped me discover new worlds of treasure-hunting fun. But things went to a new level. I soon learned that my junker-sweetheart had bigger dreams. “Oops, I Married a Junker” who wanted to run a Bed & Breakfast.

Yikes.

I’ll spare the details, but…Susie and I are now innkeepers at a beautiful B & B in Lanesboro, Minnesota, an hour south of Rochester. We’ve been a year now. It’s been a fantastic experience.

We’re finding that the junker lifestyle dovetails nicely with inn keeping; we’re also learning a lesson that other treasure hunters—who may never set foot inside a B & B—may appreciate as well.

Here ‘tis: use what you find. Don’t just get stuff to add to already too-large piles of stuff. Incorporate your finds into everyday life. If you love old dishes and find a beautiful set, eat off them. If you discover an old lamp that turns you on, put it on a table and turn it on. If you buy old jewelry that puts a sparkle in your eye, wear it and share that sparkle. Don’t just be a collector—be a connector.

Susie had collected for years. When we moved to Anna V’s B & B she searched her closets and storage bins for items to accent our 1908 Queen Anne Victorian home. Vintage linen tablecloths emerged from plastic tubs to grace the dining room table. 1940’s hat boxes now help decorate a bedroom. A pair of women’s high-top leather shoes from the ‘20s adds a touch of Victorian elegance to the Ladies Parlor. A curved glass curio cabinet went from storage shed to dining nook.

The idea of using what we find at garage sales makes us better shoppers, too. We now ask, “How are we going to use this?” before reaching for our wallets. That makes sense–and saves money.

Susie recently found an old Sheffield silver on copper 10” coffee pot with an ebony handle at an estate sale Cost: $3. Before…buy it and put it in a closet. Now… buy it, and serve hot chocolate on a snowy Minnesota winter night.

The combo junker/B& B lifestyle can collide, however. One Saturday morning I was in the kitchen, mere minutes away from our 8:30 breakfast, when I suddenly realized I was alone. Susie, chief cook in that kitchen, had disappeared. As I filled water glasses, a cold sweat formed on my forehead.

I looked out the kitchen window and noticed a group of people gathering at a home two blocks away. Uh-oh. Garage Sale. Had Susie seen it? Oh, she wouldn’t, would she? Yup, there she was, browsing away. She’d seen it all right, and had zipped out the back door quicker than I could ask “what’s gettin’ stuffed in the French Toast today?”

Not to worry, Susie had it under control. With at least thirty seconds to spare, she was back in the kitchen serving up breakfast. She was smiling, too, because at the sale she found a set of Bellogia Noritake dishes for $20. A very pretty set of dishes, in fact, that we now use at least once a week.

I married a junker who now runs a B & B. The fun continues.

But not this December, for the first three weekends Dec 3-5, 10-12, and 17-19, Lanesboro will host the Winter Escapade Weekends. Keep your computers dialed to www.lanesboro.com for all the Winter Escapade events and updates.

Some of the events include, an “Opening to the Holiday Season” ceremony at Sylvan Park, a Free Santa Clause movie “Elf” at the Commonweal Theatre, the Annual Christmas Dinner Dance, Lanesboro Christmas Inn Tour (an inside tip tells us that the Inn Tour sold out last year a couple of weeks before the tour), a $1,000 Medallion Hunt, Indoor Carnival, Winter Olympics (including a rubber chicken toss and timed rubber chicken maze), Naughty or Nice Bean Bag Tournament, Buddy the Elf Sled Race, Family Torch Light Parade (kids bring your flash lights),  Jingle all the way Bingo, Ugly Sweater Contest, Jolly old Saint Nick Oreo Eating Contest, and a Doggie Trick and Fashion Show (bring your dogs with their best tricks and outfit to win great dog prizes).  These are just a few of the Escapade highlights.

All three weekends include Holiday retail promotional shopping, Commonweal Theatre’s play “Little Women” and family joy and merry making. Buy a Winter Escapade button at Potiche Pottery and Gifts, 113 Parkway Ave N (507) 467-2929 for $5 for a plethora of promotional discounts listed on www.lanesboro.com. Don’t miss out on downtown Christmas carolers, Scrooge and the spirit of the holiday. An event that should not be missed except by maybe the Easter bunny.
