An abandoned railroad bed was purchased by the State of Minnesota and transformed into a paved trail for bicycling, hiking and groomed cross-country skiing. Lanesboro is at the heart of this much loved, Root River State Trail, which winds more than 60 miles through the valley. Journey through peaceful small towns, towering limestone bluffs, upland prairies, 48 bridges, dense hard wood forests, lush river bottoms, and working family farms.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) owns and maintains the Root River Trail System and charges no use fees, except for cross-country skiing during the winter.
