A Family-Fun Fall Rite of Passage: Big Springs Farm Pumpkins & Corn Maze Opens This Weekend!
September 11, 2024
There’s something magical about autumn in the Driftless region, in particular in Lanesboro and Whalan, where the bluffs are painted with autumnal flair. And one of the quintessential ways to welcome the season is by visiting Big Springs Farm Pumpkins & Corn Maze, which opens its gates this weekend. Tucked away just outside Lanesboro, Big Springs has become a must-visit destination for families and fall lovers alike—a rite of passage if you will.
As the air cools and the leaves start to change, the farm transforms into a playground that’s fun for the whole family.
Whether you’re hunting for the perfect pumpkin or weaving your way through the massive 10-acre corn maze, this farm offers something for everyone. And this year’s theme? It’s a Norwegian-inspired adventure, complete with gnome figures that will guide you through the maze’s 5 miles of trails. For those up for an extra challenge, don’t forget to search for the hidden checkpoint—it’s a fun twist for maze veterans!
5 ways to tackle the Corn Maze:
The Corn Maze is always impressive, and this year proves to be just as awesome as ever. In addition to the Norwegian theme that celebrates the heritage of both the owners and many of the folks in the region, this year there are 5 different ways to interact with the Maze;
- Attack it head on - Use 12 checkpoints and the aforementioned secret check points to find. Grab a map and a maze card and hit the trails.
- Whodunit? Farmer Joe is missing- A mystery most foul. Track down 7 animal suspects and piece together what happened to Farmer Joe.
- Use technology - Scan the QR code at the start of the maze, and use your GPS to navigate the maze. (Be sure to grab a paper map and maze card-GPS can be a bit spotty).
- Night Maze - Explore the maze by flashlight! (October 18th, 19th and 26th) See more below, cause it’s so cool.
- Choose your own adventure - You choose! Have Fun!
Pick-Your-Own Pumpkin Patch & Sunflower Fields
The pumpkin patch sprawls across 1.5 acres, with over 100 varieties of pumpkins, squash, and gourds to choose from. Whether you’re decorating your porch or carving the ultimate jack-o-lantern, there’s no shortage of selection. If you visit early in the season, be sure to wander through the sunflower fields, which bloom until the first frost. Grab some sunflowers or make your own bouquet from the farm’s flower patch, featuring over 50 varieties of blossoms.
Family Fun Awaits
It wouldn’t be a true fall experience without activities that bring out the kid in all of us. Big Springs Farm has all the classics—hayrides, a corn pit, giant slides, and even a 200-foot mini zipline. Kids (and adults!) can also try their hand at the duck races, explore the chicken coop and goat pen, or climb the round bale jungle gym. There’s even a mini corn maze for little ones who want a maze that’s just their size.
For those looking to snap the perfect Instagram shot, Big Springs doesn’t disappoint. From the sunflower fields to the lookout tower inside the maze, there are countless scenic spots to capture the magic of your visit.
Concessions and Fall Treats
After working up an appetite, head over to the concession stand for some mouth-watering fall comfort food. Whether it’s a bratwurst with kraut, mac and cheese dogs, caramel apples, or a cozy pumpkin spice cappuccino, there’s something to satisfy every craving. Don’t forget to pick up a hot cider or a cider slush for sipping as you explore the farm!
Maze by Flashlight—A Spooky Good Time
If you’re feeling up for a spooky adventure, mark your calendar for one of the nighttime maze events on October 18th, 19th and 26th from 7pm-10pm. Bring your flashlight and explore the maze under the stars—it’s not a haunted maze experience, but the thrill of getting lost in the dark is its own kind of spooky fun.
