History

Founded in 2023

The building housing “High Court Pub” opened in 1876. Judge J.G. French, “Squire Frenchy” as he was known, dispensed justice from 1876-1916. The court, appropriately named the High Court, was located on the third floor where the High Court Loft AirBNB is now located.

In 1868, several significant events occurred in Lanesboro. The Southern Minnesota Railroad was completed through the village, the stone dam was built and a town site company was formed to grow the community. This resulted in a period of growth in the late 1800s for Lanesboro based on the income and the commercial opportunities provided by water-powered milling and rail transportation.

Most of the historic buildings in downtown Lanesboro were constructed during the mid-late 19th century. While most of the buildings were frame-built in wood and covered in clapboard siding, this building was constructed of sturdy brick and stone. This building is the only 3 story masonry building still standing in our historic district.

The building has changed hands many times. It originally opened as Chapman Hardware. In 1917, it was empty and used for classrooms after the school was lost in a fire. In the early 1920s, Seymour Foss operated a cream and milk station on the premises. During Prohibition, the building served as Calhoun’s Pool Hall, a 3.2% saloon. Since 1945, the building has served beer and cocktails under names such as Joe’s Place, Vivian’s Tavern, Happy Hour, the Bent Elbow, Parkway Pub and now the High Court Pub since September 2, 2015 after an extensive remodel. Current owners, Jason and Bridget Harvey took over ownership in January of 2023 to continue to carry on the High Court legacy.
